Assessment Guideline:
Using IT to enhance
Business Processes
Summary
Type: Individual Report
Learning Objectives Assessed: 1, 2, 3, 4
Due Date: 10:00pm 8 th September
Deliverable: A Written Assignment submitted via TurnItIn
Weight: 20%
Task Description
The essay is 800 to 1200 words in length. Strict word limits apply (see Rubric). The
assignment is worth 20 marks that equates to 20% of the overall grade achievable in this
course. The assignment MUST be done individually. This is NOT a collaborative
assignment.
Please be aware of the University's Statute regarding academic integrity, plagiarism and the
submission of your own work.
Please note you can resubmit your assignment as many times as you like prior to the
deadline. We will only mark the latest version of the assignment submitted up until the due
date.
Requirements
Context
This component of the assignment requires you to write a brief essay of 800-1200 words. The
broad topic of this essay is “Using IT to enhance Business Processes”. This is an individual
component – group work or any collaboration on the written component is not permitted.
Informally, business processes are the ‘things the organisation does’. These organisational
activities are what create business value for the organisation. The way in which the
organisation carries out these activities are critical to the business’s success. A business that
is inefficient and/or ineffective in comparison to its competitors will likely not survive in the
market. Information technology (and, more broadly, information systems) can be used to
improve organisational performance.
With this in mind, you are required to research and write an individual essay on how IT can
potentially enhance business processes. In your essay:
• Define and describe business processes and their role in the organisation.
BISM7202 Information Systems for management
Semester 2, 2017
2
• Consider how IT and information systems can enhance these business processes (e.g.
make them more efficient and effective)
• At a high level, assess and compare the ways in which IT enhances business processes
to identify the way that you consider the most important.
• Reflect on the relevance of this insight in the context of your possible future career.
The essay should have an abstract, an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The
introduction should be short and identify the purpose, scope, and structure of the essay. The
conclusions should be short and summarize the points you have made in your essay and their
relevance.
You are to refer to external sources (for example, journal articles) to support your
observations. These sources are to be cited using one of the approved referencing styles.
Given its reflective nature, you may choose to write this essay in the first person.
Guidelines
Additional Guidelines – Please Read Carefully
Word limit: 1000 words +/- 20 % (= 800-1200 words)
If you stay under or go over the world limit, you can ONLY get 8/20
marks as set out on the last row in the marking rubric (see below
regarding what is included in the Word Count).
Weighting: 20%
Due Date: Submit by 10:00pm on 8 th September 2017.
Sections: There are four main sections in your essay: Introduction, Background,
Assessment and Comparison, and Conclusion.
You may use headings in your essay to clearly identify each section.
Abstract: An abstract is a brief summary of the overall essay, and a reader uses
an abstract to quickly ascertain the purpose of the paper. The abstract
should cover the whole paper and reports what the paper is for, what you
did, and the conclusion.
An abstract is different to the introduction in that an introduction
provides the rationale for the paper and be a forward-looking statement
as to what you intend to achieve in the paper, whereas the abstract
reports what was achieved. Note that an introduction supports its
statements with citations whereas an abstract does not.
An abstract also differs from the executive summary in that an
executive summary is intended to communicate the key points of a
document (usually, a report rather than an essay). The executive
summary can be read on its own and acted upon.

Introduction: In your opening introduction, briefly introduce the topic, the purpose
and motivation for your essay, and provide ‘signposting’ for the
remainder of the essay.
Definitions and other statements should be supported with citations from
the academic literature, not a webpage.
Background: Define and describe business processes and discuss the relationship
between IT and business process enhancement (i.e. the means by which
IT may enhance business processes).
Support your definition, description, and discussion with citations from
the academic literature, not a webpage.
Assessment and
Comparison:
Of the means by which IT may enhance business processes, identify the
means that you consider the most important and provide your rationale
for this choice.
Support your rationale with relevant citations from the academic
literature, not a webpage.
Conclusion: In the conclusion to your essay, summarise the insights you identified in
the essay and reflect on the relevance of these insights and the use of IT
to enhance business processes for yourself in your prospective future
career.
Support your statements with relevant citations from the academic
literature, not a webpage.
References:
• In your essay be sure to cite a range of different sources from the
academic literature that are quality sources identified from your
own research activities and that are relevant to your essay.
• Use the approved referencing styles APA 6 th , Chicago Footnote, or
Harvard Referencing to cite your sources. The UQ Library provides
“How To” guides for writing that you can use.
• Quality: Given the cross-disciplinary nature of this topic, your essay
should cite a minimum of 5 journal articles ranked B, A or A* at the
Australian Business Deans Council List (see
http://www.abdc.edu.au/master-journal-list.php). Sources provided
in the electronic course profile do not count as a source identified
from your own research activity.
• Relevant: The cited source must clearly support the point made in
the essay.
• As a guide, it is likely that you will need a maximum of 15 journal
articles to support your essay (e.g., published academic papers,
company reports, conference papers).
• For conference papers, see http://aisnet.org/page/Conferences
• Include quotation marks when quoting directly; also include the page
or line number for any direct quotes.
• You can submit your work multiple times prior to submission in
order to obtain a Turnitin report to be sure there are no concerns
regarding accidental plagiarism.

Formatting and professionalism
The essay is to be written to a professional standard. This requires a formal writing style – do
not use dot points, and adopt a professional tone.
The essay must be consistent with the University’s policies on academic integrity, plagiarism,
and consequences as noted below.
The essay should be typed (in Times Roman 12-point font or larger, single-spaced) and the
Word Count should be in the range of 800 to 1,200 words in total length.
The Word Count excludes the title page, abstract, tables, footnotes and references. The
word limit must be observed as noted in the Rubric or the assessment will be affected.
No appendices are to be provided. Tables in the essay should not exceed one page.
The following referencing styles are approved for this essay:
• APA 6 th
• Chicago Footnote
• Harvard referencing styles
You must be consistent with the reference style, and include for journal papers author, title,
journal name, volume, number, and number of pages. For all other sources, provide as much
as information (conference dates and location) as possible. You are to provide a written list of
sources referred to in your essay after the conclusion under the heading “References” or
“Bibliography”.
The UQ Library provides “How To” guides for writing and referencing that you can use.
You must include a title page with identifying details including the following: student
number, full name, date, title, selected referencing style, and word count.
Submission
To be done through Blackboard Assignment Submission and TurnItIn as indicated in
Learn.UQ.
Acceptable submission formats are Microsoft Word and PDF formats. The files MUST be
named in the format of BISM7202_StudentLastName_StudentID.pdf (or a. docx or .doc
extension). If your ID is 41724943 and your surname is Smith, the name of your files would
be BISM7202_Smith_41724943.pdf. The written assignment file should not be zipped.
Plagiarism
It is understandable that students talk with each other regularly, and discuss problems and
potential solutions. However, it is expected that the submitted assignment is a unique
document – all parts of the assignment are to be completed solely by the individual student.
In cases where an assignment is perceived to not be a unique work, a loss of marks and other
implications can result.

Consultation sessions
To ensure that an equal and sufficient amount of time is allocated for every student who
attends consultation sessions regarding the practical aspects of BISM7202, the average
consultation time (during busy consultation times) will be limited to 5 minutes per student.
The main aim of this restriction during busy periods is to ensure student equity and minimise
waiting time. However, in circumstances where no other students are waiting, longer
consultation times will be provided.
Tutors have advised you of their consultation times during tutorials – these details are also
available on the BISM7202 Blackboard site under “Contacts”.
Important date
Submission Date: 10:00pm 8 th September 2017
For each calendar day (i.e. including Saturdays and Sundays) after the submission deadline, a
penalty of 5% of the total possible assignment marks will be deducted until the assignment is
submitted.
Deadline extensions
An extension to the assignment deadline will only be considered for legitimate reasons and
with substantive evidence (e.g. medical certificate). A written (email) extension application
must be submitted to the course coordinator, Dr Micheal Axelsen, at least 24 hours prior to
the submission date.
Requests based on busy schedules, other commitments, machine downtime, unexpected work
pressure, corrupt disks, etc. are not sufficient bases for requesting an extension – please refer
to the BEL Faculty’s late assignment policy and the Electronic Course Profile for this course.
Marking Rubric
Your report will be graded on its structure, rationale, arguments, use of academic
support/sources, and overall presentation quality.
This assignment is worth 20 marks.
The marking rubric on the next page is designed to reflect a marking schema of 100
points that are scaled back to 20 marks. Part marks are rounded to the nearest half
mark.
For further details on how you will be assessed, refer to the marking rubric (next page).
